Synchronised swimming_ Concentration Piece1
The main theme of my concentration pieces for AP 3D Art is 'restrictions set on the obese'. This specific piece is about the biggest restrictions by society on obese people is beauty and sports. Therefore, I thought synchronised swimming is one of the hardest sports that uses sports to showcase beauty. I think the successful aspect of this piece is the realistic details and body curves, and I believe this was possible because clay is the most effective material to portray a human body realistically. The biggest challenge while making this piece was finding reference photos not only because there were no obese people synchronising, but also because it was rare to find a obese person even attempting to do a similar pose such as in ballet or cheerleading. However, this made me more passionate about this theme and felt the need to use my artwork as a message for people to challenge themselves regardless of their body size. I overcame this challenge by referencing my own body.
Modeling_Concentration Piece 2
The theme of my concentration pieces are 'restrictions set on the obese' and I the following two pieces are experimental pieces for the concentration section on AP 3D Art, a class I will take next year. This specific piece is about beauty, which is one of the most well known restriction that the society puts on obese people. I realized the reason why we unconsciously connect skinny to beautiful is because of the skinny models on media. So, I made a pelvis part of a obese person doing a model walking. One of the most successful part of this project is how I used the clay's natural crack as a striae distensae of the body. This is unique because this is not artificially made and unique to this material. The most challenging part for this project is that there was a rare reference photo of a naked obese person so I had to reference my own body or my imagination. I overcame this struggle by making a smaller version of this piece (in the progress photo) to roughly see how this piece will turn out. This helped me a lot in getting making a natural overall body shape of this piece.
Moving_Neighborhood Sculpture
This is my artwork about my neighborhood. Neighborhood itself reminded me a lot of warm and safe places, but I didn't want to get too literal with my theme. While I was brainstorming, I remembered that one is more likely to be more creative when they are comfortable, and I realized that I make the best choreographies when I am on the bus. As a result, my neighborhood became 'transportation vehicles'. One of the favorite things to do if ride the bus or the subway with my earphones on, and simultaneously making random choreographies in my head. To show that I have a personal connection with the transportation vehicle I portrayed the railroad tracks with footsteps. The foot steps were suppose to be like the shapes of a shoe but I drew bare footsteps because I am usually insecure about showing my feet and exposing my feet means I feel comfortable. I later added on the mountain and the face because I thought the railroad alone wasn't unique enough and boring. I would be able to do this project again, I would add a small sculpture of a train running down the mountain. I think adding the train will make the footsteps more obvious that they are meant to be railroad tracks.
Trompe L'oiel Sculpture
This is my Hyper-realism sculpture piece, and the object that I tired to imitate was a styrofoam. In markets, there are fishes sold and delivered in styrofoam boxes, to keep the cold from escaping and prevent the box from getting wet even if the inside icing melts. Instead of fishes, I decided to put a mermaid inside a styrofoam box, influenced by the idea of how pescatarians might think of eating fishes. (I am not a pescatarian myself but I respect their values and diet.) I picked a mermaid instead of an actual person because I thought it would be less clique and the fantastical object balances well with the realistic one. The hardest part of this project was putting details to the styrofoam box, since they were repetitive and had no other special characteristic that can make it look like styrofoam. So, I carved out some circle like parts (since styrofoam boxes is made of little circled styrofoam) on the edges to make the object look more realistic.
Contrast with Environment Sculpture
This is my contrast with the environment piece, and my chosen environment was the locker. The concept of this project is a swimming pool. The ladder is a recreation of the ladder we see to enter the swimming pool, and the round donut shape is portraying the tube. I wanted to emphasize the tube so I used dark colors that would contrast with the environment and with the rest of my pieces, which are white or silver. Although it is not shown well in the picture, I'v used white 'angel clay' to portray water because of its unique light texture the clay has. My favorite part of this project is the tube itself, i like the clean form and the unique color of the tube. On the other hand, it was my first time using thick wire, and it was very hard to control the shape of these wires. Moreover, the wires didn't stick with most of the glue we had at school, but I somehow managed to do it with hot glue at the end. Although the conceptual part didn't work out as well as I intended because the lock room is too long, I think overall this project was very fun throughout the way.
Wheel Thrown Assemblage
The objective of this piece is to use three wheel thrown pieces and assemblage them into one piece. The pieces that were done on the wheel was the sphere, the donut, and the one of the two spouts. It was intended to look like a planet in a ring, but the donut was too small to fit in the sphere so I've just turnt it into a planet sitting on its own ring. I really like the color of the ring, but I think the color of the planet made the patterns look less effective. |
Hanging Sculpture_Final
There were two adjustments made to this project. First, I had to abandon one of the main objective of this project: the object has to be 'hanging'. Although I tried to reduce the weight of the octopus by making the wall thickness as thin as possible, the legs and the head itself was too heavy compared to what the ceiling/tree branch can hold. For this reason, I changed my project to be lying on the floor or holding by someone as it is shown in the photos. Second, I had to separate the legs from the head of the octopus because the octopus's head clay was dried before the legs were attached. Because the clay would break with weak attachment, attaching the legs individually on the umbrella seemed to be a better idea. As a result, I think it created not only a more unique, but also a stable artwork. Although this project deviates from the the main goal of this project, I am proud that the rest of the artwork turned out to be successful and intentional in expressing its meaning.
